Urban parks help Connecticut’s biodiversity. The 75-acre Bates Woods is New London's largest public park, envisioned a century ago as the site of a large natural reservation and part of a connecting parkway system, a habitat of mixed hardwoods, meadows, wetlands, streams and WPA stonework. On this walk, we'll explore the little-known interior of the park, where the 2003 Bioblitz counted 1,691 species of plants and animals, and talk about the park's history from Colonial times through the Civil War and Great Depression to the present day.
