Purple Martins (Progne subis) are the largest member of the swallow family and in the Eastern part of the United States are entirely dependent on humans and artificial housing. Bring a chair, sit back, and enjoy a light breakfast with Marvelwood School Science Department Chairman and Kent Land Trust Director Laurie Doss. You will learn about this endearing species and the efforts by Marvelwood and Kent Land Trust to increase inland colonies of Purple Martins in Connecticut’s Northwest corner over the past decade. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in nest checks and engage in an ongoing project in partnership with CT’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to color band nestlings to study natal dispersal of martins in the state. Bring binoculars and cameras to help look for and/or photograph color banded martins which may be breeding in the colony and help figure out where the breeding martins were originally banded as nestlings. Find out how you can help Purple Martins and tips on establishing martin colonies on your property if you have habitat attractive to Purple Martins. We will also have a temporary Story Walk set up with the book “The Day I Met a Martin,” A story about purple martins and how people can help written by two Marvelwood School students. For those who enjoy hiking, continue your morning outdoors on the trails in Kent Land Trust’s Skiff Mountain South Preserve (adjacent to Marvelwood School) following our time together. Park by the Performing Arts Center and walk towards the white Purple Martin house that is below the tennis courts. Space is limited. Please NO DOGS.
