American Hiking Society (AHS) Report Highlights Hiking-Health Connections

American Hiking Society (AHS), the national organization that promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience, recently released its newest report, Hiking Trails in America: Pathways to Health. CFPA, an AHS alliance member, is pleased to promote this fantastic report which reinforces what many of us already knew, that we can use our own two feet to stay fit and healthy!

AHS’s website states, “With only 1 in 5 American adults meeting the Centers for Disease Control’s physical activity guidelines, clearly something must change. In the report, American Hiking Society states that only when exercise is enjoyable, as hiking certainly is, will most people stick with it and reap the benefits that regular exercise offers. Additionally, hiking requires little more than a sturdy pair of shoes and people at virtually all levels of fitness can participate.”

The report was recently released at a press event on Capitol Hill with such noteworthy trail champions as Rep. Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (NE-01), Tom Tidwell (Chief, US Forest Service), Denise Ryan (Deputy Director, National Park Service), Sara Newman (Captain, US Public Health Service), Christine Walters (Chief Operating Officer, Warrior Expeditions), and Gregory Miller, Ph.D. (President, American Hiking Society).

Thanks AHS for continuing to promote hiking and its incredible health benefits. To learn more about AHS, visit their website at www.americanhiking.org
