Event Description:

Insects make dramatic contributions to food webs as sources of food for migratory birds and are powerful indicators of environmental trends such as climate change.

Join Robert Clark, PhD candidate at Wesleyan University, for this engaging Science Sunday and become a Citizen Scientist. Get the training and tools you will need to collect real, scientific data that will be available to insect ecologists!

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

This will begin with a 30 minute lecture geared towards adults, but children of all ages are welcome to participate in the insect collecting program that follows in Hurd State Park. The goal of this program is to provide a lesson plan to teachers and naturalists alike who want to learn more about how our local forests work.  Learn how to collect and identify the species of insects that feed on oak trees.  Also learn how to share this information with scientists.  The data collected will be used to understand how habitat change and climate change are altering food webs on a regional scale.

Please meet at the Hurd State Park Pavilion which can be accessed off of Hog Hill Road in East Hampton.

CFPA is very excited to be hosting this pilot program.  Please help us build this great program by attending and provide your feedback.  We are looking for experienced educators and volunteers but all interested parties are welcome to participate.

Science Sunday is a free education series sponsored by Connecticut Forest & Park Association. Learn from professional scientists and amateur naturalists as we delve into the science of the natural world. We may explore forest insects, migratory birds, wildlife habitat, forest ecology, and more. Topics and guest presenters change, so we invite you to join us for a variety of scientific topics.
