Autumn Walk for Conservation Action

Saturday, December 2, 2017 - 10:00am - Sunday, December 3, 2017 - 9:45am
Hammonasset Beach State Park
1288 Boston Post Rd
Madison, Connecticut 06447
Event Type:
Outdoor Recreation
All are welcome
Event Description:

Due to construction in the park, the beach areas are largely inaccessible, as is the nature center.  Therefore, we will meet at the Shoreline Greenway east lot at 10 a.m. and walk 1.1 miles to the temporary end at Webster Point Road, returning the way we came.  The walk is 2.2 miles and should take about an hour and twenty minutes, out and back.  There is some beautiful scenery on the shore side of the trail.

Before we begin our walk, we will discuss the Land and Water Conservation Act, first enacted in 1964 and due to expire in September 2018.  This program has funded several projects in the park, including a large grant for the nature center at Meig's Point. Connecticut is featured this week in the 52 weeks program of the Land and Water Conservation Fund Coalition, which spotlights a different state each week.

In addition to CFPA, representatives of the Appalachian Mountain Club Connecticut Chapter,  and the Friends of Hammonasset will speak and be available to answer questions about the park and the program.

The hike portion of this event will be led by Janet Ainsworth. Janet may be contacted at janetkainsworth@gmail.com or 203-530-7826 up to the time of the hike.

Janet is a First Aid/CPR-trained CFPA Ramble Guide and AMC Connecticut Chapter Family Hike Leader, conservation volunteer and member of the AMC Board of Directors.
