For your safety, we encourage you to make sure you have the latest edition (19th) of the Connecticut Walk Book, as many conditions cause changes to the trails. Please check this website for updated information whenever you're planning a hike on the Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails. These updates reflect changes to the 19th edition of the Connecticut Walk Book (East & West) only.  All prior editions are out-of-date and should be considered obsolete.

Salmon River Trail, Comstock Bridge, Colchester- Temporary Trail Relocation

Description: 

The Comstock Covered Bridge off Rt 16 in Colchester is closed for repairs (see WB Map SR-1). A temporary trail relocation is marked by blue-topped stakes and blue flagging.  Please access the Salmon River Trail by parking at the temporary parking lot and cross the Salmon River by walking along RT 16.  Turn left on Bridge Street.  Near the end of Bridge Street, turn right at a yello

Mattabesett Trail, River Road Section, Middletown- Trail Notice

Description: 

The power line crossing of the Mattabesett Trail (map MB-1) near its eastern terminus at River Road remains the site of a great deal of heavy construction. Hikers have reported that it can be tough finding the trail on the western side of the power lines. That's because many trees have gone down to widen the power lines and to put in new poles, wires, etc.

Saugatuck Trail- Animal Danger Advisory

Description: 

A pair of goshawks are reportedly nesting adjacent to the Saugatuck Trail in Redding (map SK-2) south of the Rt. 53 causeway. The birds are very aggressive and territorial. Hikers have reported being attacked by the birds in recent weeks. Hikers should take special care on the trail, especially if hiking with children.

METACOMET TRAIL, Wassel Reservoir, Southington & Berlin- Trail Relocation

Description: 

.2 miles of the Metacomet Trail have been relocated off New Britain Water Dept. property (see Map 3b) just north of Ragged Mountain. Please stay on the trail and follow signs and blazes to by-pass the cliff area by the North Dam reservoir.

MATTABESSETT TRAIL- Rt 66 to Spruce Brook Rd, Middletown & Meriden- Trail Relocation

Description: 

The three mile walk between the Country Club Road trailhead in Middletown and Giuffrida Park in Meriden has been largely replaced by new trail footage across Middlesex Land Trust property, Middletown open space and Meriden Water Department land.

MATTABESSETT TRAIL, Reservoir Section, Middletown- Parking Notice

Description: 

In an effort to protect watershed health, please do not park on the Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) watershed lands on Reservoir Road- nearest to Asylum Reservoir #1 (Map MB-1). Instead please access the Mattabesett Trail from Brooks Road. Thank you for your cooperation in protecting the CVH water supply.

TUNXIS TRAIL, Burlington Region, Plymouth- Logging Notice

Description: 

A timber harvest on the Bristol Water property is scheduled for the next several weeks.  The logging equipment will access the harvest via the Blue/Yellow side trail off the Tunxis Trail (map TU-3a).

Chatfield Trail- Route 80 to River Rd- Parking Notice

Description: 

The parking area on Champlin Road (Map CH-1) is privately owned. Please refrain from parking in this area.

Logging near Metacomet Trail in Southington

Description: 

New Britain Water Department is conducting a timber harvest northwest of Shuttle Meadow Reservoir.  There will be a buffer so the trail is not affected, but hikers are cautioned that the trail crosses a woods road that will be used by logging trucks and equipment.  The logging will end in February 2010.

Pachaug Trail- Griswold

Description: 

Pachaug State Forest: Rt. 201 to Latham Road: Due to environmental impacts, trail blazes have been removed and this section of the Pachaug Trail will not be maintained by CFPA volunteers until further notice. Trail users may continue to access this area at their own risk. (Walk Book Map PC-5)

 

QUINNIPIAC TRAIL- HAMDEN

Description: 

Where the Quinnipiac Trail goes onto Rocky Top then into the woods, new plans have not been established yet. Hikers that know the area still use that clear cutted area but we are recommending that hikers stay on Rocky Top Rd until Sherman Avenue then walk North on the bike path to West Woods Rd where they can pick up the Quinnipiac Trail again and continue towards Sleeping Giant State Park.

METACOMET TRAIL RELOCATION - PLAINVILLE

Description: 

Direction of travel: South to North

METACOMET TRAIL- NORTH OF BRADLEY MOUNTAIN

Description: 

This reroute on the Metacomet Trail was completed to move the trail from the busy RT72/RT84 overpass to a safer, off-road location.  The new route (running south to north) now runs into New Britain Ave. and exits on Esther Street.  The Trail then turns right onto Black Rock Ave followed by a left on Wooster St.

Mattabesett Trail Update- Chauncey Peak area

Description: 

A trail re-route has been finished to eliminate part of the road walk from I-91 to Giuffrida Park. By clicking this map you will be able to see both the old trail route in dark blue and the new route in light blue.

MOHAWK TRAIL, Dark Entry Road to Cornwall Village - Temporary Closure

Description: 

A section of the Mohawk Trail, from the entrance at Dark Entry Road to the Cornwall Village trailhead, will be closed temporarily beginning at sunset on Friday, October 23, until sunrise on Monday, November 9.  Hikers and other visitors throughout the year are reminded to observe the No Parking and No Trespassing signs posted in this area, which is private property and not open to the public.  Violators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Shenipsit Trail, Birch Mountain Road to Carter Street, Manchester - Trail Closed

Description:

This secton is closed as the high water this spring and summer has damaged the crossing of Birch Mountain Brook.  The trail is best picked up on Camp Meeting Road where parking is available.  Work will be done to re-open this section in the fall.

METACOMET TRAIL, Farmington - New Settlement Road Trail

Description: 

This new trail connects the Metacomet Trail with a parking pull-over area on the south side of Route 6, west of the Metacomet Trail and east of Pinnacle Road in Farmington. (Parking is very limited along Route 6 at the Metacomet trail crossing.) 

QUINNIPIAC TRAIL, Hamden - Road Construction

Description: 

During the construction phase of the sports complex of Quinnipiac University, contractors will re-build Kimberly Road and relocate a short section the Blue-Blazed Quinnipiac Trail west about a hundred feet. The trail will be closed temporarily when road construction begins and appropriate signage will be posted.  CFPA will post the closing/re-opening dates on this website when we're notified that construction is underway.

SAUGATUCK TRAIL, Redding/Weston - No pets allowed.

Description: 

Correction to Connecticut Walk Book West. Please refer to the section on page 249 that states "pets are not permitted on some parts of the Trail." In fact, as per Department of Public Health regulations, pets are not permitted on any parts of the Trail within the Centennial Watershed State Forest. 

ASPETUCK VALLEY TRAIL, Newtown/Redding - No pets please

Description: 

As per Department of Public Health regulations, pets are not permitted on any parts of the Trail within the Centennial Watershed State Forest.

QUINNIPIAC TRAIL, Hamden - Trail Interruption

Description: 

Due to unexpected logging on private property, a section of the Quinnipiac Trail at Rocky Top Road is no longer accessible. Most, if not all, of the trees marked with CFPA's distinctive blue blaze have been cut down and the trail route interrupted. Please plan your hike accordingly in order to avoid this area. For details of the original route, see page 227 of Connecticut Walk Book West. (Posted March 2008)

METACOMET TRAIL, Route 20 to Phelps Road Section, Suffield/East Granby - Closure on

Description: 

The Trail is closed on the Bloomfield Fish and Game Club property.

ZOAR TRAIL, Newtown - Seasonal Closure

Description: 

Hikers on the Zoar Trail are reminded to follow the alternate Blue/Yellow Dot Trail between April 15 and August 15 inclusive (Connecticut Walk Book West, page 62, 1.8 mile mark). Located in the lower Paugusset State Forest in Newtown, this forested section of the trail is closed during the spring and summer to protect nesting hawks and other vulnerable wildlife.

TUNXIS TRAIL, Route 44 to Route 219, New Hartford - Description Correction

Description: 

This correction adds a sentence to page 307 of the Connecticut Walk Book West. The change follows the fifth sentence under ‘The hike:' and is shown in bold type below:

MATTABESETT TRAIL, Meriden/Berlin - Reopened Trail on Lamentation Mountain

Description: 

A previously closed 2.5-mile section of the Mattabesett Trail on Lamentation Mountain, between the Meriden/Berlin town line and Spruce Brook Road in Berlin, has been reopened. The reopened trail follows essentially the same route as before, with the following change: Starting from mile 10.6 (Connecticut Walk Book East, page 18; Connecticut Walk Book West, page 102) the trail description should now read as follows: Leave woods road following ridgeline. Bear right (10.8) from ridge, descend, and quickly cross woods road and continue descent.

MATTABESETT TRAIL, Reservoir Section, Middletown - Parking Notice

Description: 

All hikers! When parking at the trailhead on River Road in Middletown (across from the power plant) please notify the guard at the power plant as to the number of cars and how long they will be parked at the trailhead. Also leave a note in the windshield with contact information. Failure to do so may result in your vehicle being ticketed and/or towed.

MATTABESETT TRAIL, Middletown/Meriden - Replacement Text

Description: 

In Connecticut Walk Book East, page 17, for directions to Country Club Road trailhead:

To reach Country Club Road trailhead: From I-91 exit 20, go east on Country Club Road. A small, two-car parking lot is located at the trailhead on the south side of Country Club Road, 0.25 mile from the I-91 northbound exit and entrance ramps.

NAYANTAQUIT TRAIL, Lyme - Replacement Text

Description: 

In Connecticut Walk Book East, beginning with ‘The hike:' on page 97 through end of mileage matrix on page 98.)

The following revised text addresses a potentially confusing section on the eastbound Nayantaquit Trail between Nickerson Hill and the northern end of the Crossover Trail. The Pipe line shown at the top of the map on page 99 was drawn in error and does not exist. Text changes between mile 2.0 and 2.8 and to the mileage matrix are included in this revision.
