This event replaces the Nipmuck hike published in the brochuer. MANSFIELD, A Connecticut Trail Town. Hike in Dunhamtown Forest! Join Mansfield's Park Advisory Committee for this easy 2-mile or 2 hour hike over moderate terrain through a mature forest (managed as a demonstration forest) in one of Mansfield's largest preserves. Meet at 10 AM at White Oak Parking Area. From Route 32 go East on Mansfield City Road for 1.5 miles. White Oak Rd. is on left. Parking area is on left after College Park Condos. Look for signs. ADDITIONAL HIKES STAFFORD: Nipmuck State Forest Forestry Tour led by DEP Forester Ed McGuire. 9:00 am Saturday June 7th. Hike leader and forester for Nipmuck State Forest in Stafford on gravel forest roads and snowmobile trails, with some off-trail sections. Several types of recent forest harvests will be seen and described, along with a prescribed burn area, a recently constructed forest road, Roaring Brook, Stoughton Brook, old foundations, wells and stone walls. Bring lunch and water. Meet at the intersection of Fenton Road and Stone House Road in Stafford. Directions: From Route 190 turn south on Rockwell Road in Stafford, then left onto Fenton Road. From I-84 take Exit 71 in Willington, and head north on Polster Road, turn right onto Fenton Road. The hike will cover about 6 miles in 5 hours. Kids and dogs are welcome. Hard rain cancels. MERIDEN; Metacomet Trail Through Hike from Hubbard Park to Ragged Mountain. Saturday, June 7th 9:30 AM &endash; A 10 mile (A2A) hike. Meet at Ragged Mountain in Berlin and carpool to Hubbard Park. The hike will cover Castle Craig, West Peak, Small Mtn and the Cliffs of Ragged Mountain. You should be in good physical shape to do this hike. Make sure to wear sturdy boots, bring 2 quarts of water and some food. For directions and questions contact the Hike Leader, David Bellemare. DURHAM; Mattabesett Trail's Beseck Ridge in Durham. SUNDAY June 8th 9:45 AM, This 5.7 mile hike (B2B) has many beautiful outlooks. This section of the Trail has a few steep hills, but most of the hike is ridge walking with great views. This is a through hike so we will be meeting at one end of the trail and carpooling to the other. We will meet at the parking lot on the corner of Routes 68 and 157 in Durham (known as Reeds Gap). VOLUNTOWN; Mount Misery on the Pachaug Trail. Saturday, June 7th at 10 AM. Meet at 'the Ball Field" in Pachaug State Forest. Pass the Ranger Station at entrance and follow signs. Join Leader Erwin Goldstein and the National Honor Society of Wheeler High School on a hike up Mount Misery. You can learn about trail maintenance, local history, and tree identification while hiking up this noted outlook. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, hike should take about 2 hours. STONINGTON; Guided Hike through Manatuck Land Preserve. Saturday, June 7th at 4 PM. Lead by Maggie Jones, Director of the Dennison Pequotsepos Nature Center. The Manatuck Preserve is a 200 plus acre conservation parcel. This will be an easy afternoon walk to look for resident birds and wildflowers. Bring binoculars if you have them &endash; a few extra pairs will be available. Meet at the Pine Point School Parking Lot on Barnes Road in Stonington. MIDDLEFIELD - Saturday, June 7, 9 AM: Headwaters Hike. Join the Mattabesset River Watershed Association for a two to three hour hike (~4 miles) up Mount Higby, a basalt ridge in the Mattabesset River watershed that forms the headwaters for Sawmill Brook in Middletown. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and a snack. Meet on the north side of Rt. 66 in Middlefield where Rt. 66 changes from divided highway to a two lane road. This hike kicks-off a week of river related events -- contact Paul Woodworth for more information (860-346-3282). Participants do not have to preregister. I intend to do it rain or shine, unless it's really stormy.
