In 2002, the
National Research Council released its long awaited report on the
nation’s capacity for conducting forestry research. A Forest Science
Summit in May 2002 reviewed the findings and considered ways to
reinvigorate the capacity. Among the ideas posed were several roles for
the Forestry Research Advisory Council to the Secretary of Agriculture
(FRAC). In two subsequent meetings, FRAC reviewed several ideas and
decided to appoint a Blue Ribbon Panel to consider these and other
questions.
The Panel was appointed in early 2003. Bill Bentley, who is a
Development Associate at CFPA, was appointed the facilitator chair of
the panel. The CFPA Board accepted Bill’s request that CFPA serve as
the fiduciary home for two grants to support the panel’s work.
The Final Report of the panel on America's Forest Research Policy can
be accessed below. Copies may be purchased from CFPA for $6.00 each.
