SATURDAY, JUNE 7Th

OVER 130 STATEWIDE EVENTS

Whether you’re interested in a long or short hike, a history walk, kayaking, tree identification, horseback-riding, orienteering, letterboxing, trail maintenance, or cycling, Connecticut Trails Day 2008 offers a large variety of events for you and your family to enjoy. Within these, we’ve highlighted three unique Trails Day 2008 programs in separate sections below. The symbol preceding each section identifies these events so that you can find them easily in this brochure.  Coordinated statewide by Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA) since 1993, Trails Day is a nationwide celebration that brings awareness to trails and the many joys and benefits they provide. Strong participation by organizations like the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), local and regional land trusts, town agencies, outdoor-minded businesses, CFPA volunteers, and our great sponsors are key to the success of Connecticut Trails Day. Ann Colson, along with her CFPA team and the Trails Day Committee, deserve Special Thanks for their dedicated work in soliciting events and preparing this brochure. CFPA is excited that Connecticut Trails Day will be a part of the DEP’s Great Park Pursuit this year.  The Great Park Pursuit, a multi-week outdoor family adventure, connects Connecticut’s children and their families to the wonders our state parks and forests have to offer. Beginning in early April, it’s a contest that will have you decoding clues and participating in fun activities and challenges. Which Trails Day events will be a Great Park Pursuit?  Stay tuned to www.nochildleftinside.org/pursuit for details.

Metacomet-Monadnock-Mattabesett Trail – The MMM Trail is the subject of legislation (New England National Scenic Trail Designation Act) passed by the
U. S. House of Representatives on January 29, 2008, that will now move on to the Senate. The New England Trail includes the Metacomet and Mattabesett Trails in Connecticut and the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail in Massachusetts. If enacted and signed by the President, it would be the first new National Scenic Trail designation in 25 years! (A 50-mile section of the first National Scenic Trail – the Appalachian - is also located in Connecticut.) This year, we have a dozen MMM hikes scheduled for Trails Day 2008. We encourage you to sample these sections, thank our Representatives in Congress for their support and votes, and join us in a strong effort for passage of this bill (S 923) in the Senate.

WalkCT – This new CFPA initiative is a holistic approach to promote walking and other non-motorized activities along trails and sidewalks around the state. It brings together the health, recreation, tourism, cultural and historical, transportation, and economic development communities to promote, preserve, and expand these opportunities. Through a new website, family-oriented guided walks, and technical assistance, CFPA hopes to foster healthier lifestyles for all of our citizens. Our goal is a state where sidewalks meet trails, where cities are linked to towns, and no resident is farther than 15 minutes away from a great walk. Bring the kids and join us on the trail for three WalkCT Family Hikes on Trails Day 2008! Led by certified CFPA volunteers, these hikes are an easy way for you and your family to get re-acquainted with the great outdoors. These popular hikes take place the last weekend of every month as a free public service to the children and families of Connecticut. Visit the CFPA website at www.ctwoodlands.org for current listings and additional information.

Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route -- Although study efforts began in 2000 for the U.S. Congress to designate the Route as a new National Historic Trail, this is a new Trails Day event for 2008. The Route is 600 miles of history, winding from Newport, Rhode Island through Connecticut and eight other states to Yorktown, Virginia. It honors the Franco-American alliance and the efforts of Generals George Washington and
Jean Baptiste de Rochambeau to preserve that alliance as we struggled for our Independence.  Legislation is pending in the House (HR 1286) and Senate (S 686) for designation of this new National Historic Trail. There are three W3R events scheduled for Trails Day 2008 and each will include historical presentations and information that describe parts of th
